Rock Climbing and Rappelling

Our basic guided rock climbing and rappelling trips are a fantastic way to enjoy the area and set your adventurous spirit free. Consider trying one of our skill building courses. Our guides have a mix of professional training and certifications, along with years of experience. We accommodate any experience level. All gear and equipment is included in the cost of the guided trip. Guided rock climbing, guided rappelling and classes are available 7 days a week. Please contact us to reserve a day.  A 24-hour notice is preferred, but feel free to contact us for availability and we'll fit you in if possible.

Basic Guided Climbing / Rappelling Trip

Pre-requisites: none Do you just want to see what rock climbing or rappelling is all about and not learn the technical stuff? Sign up for a guided climbing or rappelling trip. Our guides will set up the ropes and belay you while you and your friends enjoy a day out in The Red River Gorge. 1/2 to 1 day 1 to 6 people

Learn to Climb Course

Pre-requisites: none This is an entry level course for people with little or no rock climbing experience. You will learn knots, gear, terminology, belaying and rappelling. Also included will be simple rope set-ups and technique coaching. 2 days 1 to 4 people

Gym to Outdoor Transition Course

When climbing outdoors for the first time, with only prior gym experience, let us help you make that transition to the crags with ease and confidence.  Focus is on safety, cleaning bolt anchors, rappelling, being lowered, belaying and leading theory. This is an information intensive course. Considering a second day to reinforce lessons learned is recommended. 1 to 2 days 1 to 4 people

What to Bring/Special Considerations:

We provide all the gear for rock climbing. You should wear clothing that doesn't restrict your movements (especially your legs) and that is suitable for the weather, sturdy shoes for hiking (no sandals or flip flops please!), and bring plenty of water for everyone in your group, especially in the warmer months. We will be hiking to all of the climbing areas that we visit so plan on walking up to 20 minutes prior to climbing.

Some other suggested items:

Sunscreen insect repellent camera hat and/or sunglasses your own harness and climbing shoes (if you have them) food rain gear

Please DO NOT bring:

Pets coolers alcoholic beverages lawn chairs firearms You should bring no more than you can comfortably carry in a small day pack. We can provide small day-packs for your personal things.

Our Guides

Erik Kloeker

Erik is a Kentucky local, passionate about climbing in Red River Gorge and abroad. Erik enjoys multiple disciplines including Sport, Traditional, and Multi-pitch climbing. He has over 350 ticks in the Red River Gorge alone, including numerous First Ascents. In the winter Erik enjoys climbing abroad, spending time the last 3 winters in El Potrero Chico, Mexico. When not climbing, Erik is an active partner of the American Safe Climbing Association and RRG Fixed Gear Initiative, replacing manky, rusted bolts in Red River Gorge, having replaced well over 100 bolts and counting to date. Erik is a AMGA Certified Single Pitch Instructor, and member of the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team.

Craig Bentley

Craig is the Supervisory Guide for all outdoor and outfitter activities at Red River Outdoors. An avid and lifetime outdoorsman, he has been on rope or boat for as long as he cares to remember. He has spent his lifetime in the forest or on the water either for work or play. Born and raised in Eastern Kentucky, he has 30+ years experience in land and natural resource management working as a contractor or an employee of various private, State, and Federal agencies throughout the United States and abroad. Along with all Red River Outdoor guides, he hopes to introduce you to one of our services that can provide you a lifetime of joy outdoors.
